Art of City with gray-colored sky view at The Londoner

In this Bridal Week edition of Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner, we caught up with the wonderful Kate Halfpenny about art, favourite pubs, and living in London. A celebrity stylist, renowned fashion designer and founder of luxury bridalwear brand Halfpenny London, Kate Halfpenny has designed dresses for A-List clientele such as Rihanna and Kate Moss. Back in 2022, she held her Wonder collection shoot at The Londoner.

Shooting at The Londoner

I chose to shoot the Wonder campaign in The Londoner because of its inspiring, beautiful interiors - I love the dreamy glossy colours on the different floors which gave us such delicious backgrounds to shoot the dresses against. The contrasting marble in the powder room, and the soft velvet upholstered seating in the mirrored Whisky Room.

It's just the most dreamy hotel and it gave me a landscape and a narrative to put my whole collection into context. There are so many places within The Londoner that I dream of shooting, especially that swimming pool!

TL: Let's talk art... what was the last exhibition you went to?

KH: 'Beyond The Streets' at the Saatchi Gallery.

TL: Is that your favourite gallery?

KH: I love the Gagosian Gallery in King's Cross as it’s so close to my studio and always so inspiring, but equally I am a huge fan of the Serpentine as my most memorable show, Cy Twombly, was held there many moons ago!

TL: What's your favourite piece of art at The Londoner?

KH: I’m torn between the epic sculptural Andrew Rae Moonhead in the lobby or the inks on paper by Frida Wannerberger in the Whitcomb's restaurant; her illustrative works are so wonderful.

TL: If you could buy any building in London and live there, which would it be?

KH: The Tate Modern.

I love the Thin White Duke in Great Windmill Street for a romantic cocktail with some small plates.

TL: Do you have a favourite pub in London?

KH: My husband and I used to hang out in The Lord Stanley on Camden Park Road most weekends, it was at the end of Camden Mews where we still have our house. It’s such a great pub where you can immerse yourself in the Sunday papers or grab a quiet bavette steak and glass of red after work.

TL: Speaking of food... where do you like to eat?

KH: Kiln on Brewer Street. The Thai-inspired dishes are cooked on woodturning ovens. It’s always packed in there and so utterly delicious.

Favourite Things

TL: Favourite shop?

KH: Dover Street Market, I adore the diversity of the brands they offer and it’s a stone's throw from The Londoner.

TL: Favourite walk?

KH: Down the Canal from Camden to King's Cross, I used to walk this route all the time and loved watching the whole Coal Drops Yard evolve weekly.

TL: Favourite cocktail at 8 at The Londoner?

KH: Sakura Royale. It's so utterly delicious!

TL: Most romantic spot in London?

KH: I love the Thin White Duke on Great Windmill Street for a romantic cocktail with some small plates.
