Ahead of Whitcomb's at The Londoner's highly anticipated wine dinner hosted by Laura Rhys, we spoke to the Gusbourne ambassador and Master Sommelier about restaurant recommendations and fond childhood memories of London. In 2009, Laura won the prestigious UK Sommelier of the Year title and in 2010 achieved Master Sommelier status from the Court of Master Sommeliers – an honour achieved by only 273 individuals worldwide since its founding in 1969.

On Beginnings

TL: What is your earliest memory of London?

LR: When I was a child, I used to come to London with my mum and dad and my brother, normally at Christmas time, to spend a few days and watch a West End show. I loved the lights and sounds of the city. And the tube!"

TL: What was your first job in the city?

LR: Head Sommelier at La Trompette in Chiswick.

London Hotspots

TL: Do you have a favourite London walk?
LR: I love to be near the river, so a walk along the South Bank, from Westminster to Tower Bridge, past The Globe and Borough Market. You can really feel the buzz of the city along here. As well as a quick stop in the Tate Modern and in Borough Market for a bite to eat.

TL: What's your London secret?
CH: London Shell Company, a restaurant boat moored in Paddington that cruises along the canal. Amazing seafood and a great experience.

The best meal I ever had...

"Core, by Clare Smyth. It was a couple of years ago now, but the memory has stayed with me. It was an exceptional meal and a beautiful dining experience. I definitely need to go back.

I also love Noble Rot. The lunch menu is always a favourite of mine, great value and a delicious, clever menu - and the wine list is superb!"

Last Thoughts On... The Londoner

I love the luxurious, stylish and elegant rooms, as well as the friendly staff and wonderful service. My favourite space within the hotel is The Stage. A beautiful place to unwind in the afternoon – and I always give in to the temptation of the cake trolley! I also love the Champagne (and Gusbourne) selection.
